Portola Jr. High School 1958-1959. It's the time and place where Creedence Clearwater Revival originated. It was in this El Cerrito school that John Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook formed a band called the Blue Velvets. This fateful meeting would result in one of the greatest rock bands America has ever produced. A classic American success story. A few little kids with big dreams, growing up in a small suburb without much money (John Fogerty bought his guitar and amp with a loan from his mother and paid it back by delivering newspapers.) and achieving fame and fortune, rising to the top of artistic greatness, through hard work, perseverence, vision and talent. I believe that the opportunities afforded by an individual's environment also play an important role in determining the success of an individual. The yearbook that I'm selling serves to recall the environment that produced the Creedence Clearwater Revival Legacy. It measures 9" long x 6" tall x 3/8" thick. It's a paperback bound with two staples and a strip of linen glued to the spine. An inch of the linen at the top of the spine is frayed (See one of the pictures.) The front cover and the first two pages have separated from one of the staples. Except for that, the binding is strong and all other pages are securely bound. The covers have soiling, fading and writing. Some pages have corner creases, signatures and writing. The blank pages at the end of the book are filled with inscriptions. No signatures or writing by the band members, who were in the 8th. grade. There are ten pages of 8th. grade class photos. Two of the band members were in class 130. Stu Cook is in the fourth row from the top, second from right. Doug Clifford is in the top row, last one on the right. I could not identify John Fogerty in the class photos, but, elsewhere in the yearbook, John is probably in the Bass Clef photo, top row, second from left. I scanned some other pictures of students, who may or may not be John Fogerty. There are pages of 7th. and 9th. graders, staffers, and club members as well. Thanks go to a former classmate of the band, who helped me identify the bandmember's photos.
