    CHEROKEE SYLLABARY (alphabet) FLASH CARDS
These flash cards are in a book format. They contain the Cherokee Syllabary symbols for quick recollection. This study tool aids in learning and remembering the syllabary through visual association. The symbol and its phontic tone is shown in a picture that serves as a key to quick recall.
From the earliest times, the Cherokee lived in a vast area of what is now the Southeastern United States. Their towns reached into areas now covered by the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. They called themselves Ani-yun-wi-ya, meaning the Principal People, the Real People, or the Original People.
Sequoyah, a Cherokee, was the only person in history to have created a complete alphabet by themselves, without any help. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he completed this writing system for the Cherokee Indians. Sequoyah’s syllabary is made up of 85 characters each representing a sound in the Cherokee language.
